The Surrey County Sextette and 50m team, Bisley 2012

L-R Alison Leech, Lina Jones, Bill Brown, Austin Wilshire, Paul Duxbury, Tim Hammond

A total of 22 Surrey shooters entered the various competitions at the NSRA 2012 Bisley rifle meeting, held between 11 and 19 August 2012. The conditions were generally warm and included all the Bisley perils of changeable (or not enough) wind and mirage, but thankfully no serious rain and, notably, no mud. The Surrey tent provided refuge from the sun and also tea and coffee making facilities and the week ended on the hottest day of the year for the Earl Roberts final on Saturday.

Notable performances included 6th place in the Earl Roberts final for Addiscombe’s Simon Aldhouse (results here), Worplesdon’s Charlotte Doe shot for the GB under 21 juniors in the international postal ISSF 60 shot William Drew Match (results here), Wimbledon’s Alison Leech and Bookham’s Lina Jones both shot for the (unfortunately losing) GB Ladies in the Randle match (on US targets) and (winning) England ladies in the Home Countries match, there was promotion for Wimbledon’s Stuart Pearson to class A after an impressive 3rd place finish in the grand aggregate, and Chobham’s Bill Brown reached 5th place in class X at the weekend and Bookham’s Peter Jones finished 7th in class B, also in the weekend aggregate.

The County had a lean year, with 3rd in the County 50m team competition and 5th in the Ladies 50m team competition, 5th in the Queen Alexandra Trophy and 5th in the County Sextette. The representative team from Bookham came 4th in the Astor County Championship and a Bookham team narrowly missed out on the Queen Alexandra club team competition, with a 2nd to Hendon.

Despite the relative absence of silverware for county shooters and teams, the meeting made for an enjoyable week’s shooting, not least due to the favourable weather. Hopefully more County shooters will be able to find time in their diaries for a shoot in the weekend or grand aggregates in 2013.
