New Surrey range opened by Sport Minister

It was a great day for Farncombe & Godalming Rifle Club and shooting in general on 15th October 2011, when the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, opened the club’s new 25-yard range in his South West Surrey constituency. Mr Hunt unveiled a plaque to mark the occasion after an introduction by Chairman Roger Remington and stayed to cut a celebratory cake and to watch a shooting demonstration by club members.

Before the unveiling Mr Hunt also made a special presentation to the club’s secretary, Bernard Smith, who received both the NSRA Distinguished Service Medal, to celebrate 25 years of continuous service in his post and an NSRA Special Services Diploma, to recognise his contribution to target rifle shooting over the past 50 years.

A demonstration shoot followed the opening ceremony on the new range, with 15-year-old British Junior Squad member Sebastian Fomin confidently shooting a creditable 99 in front of the cameras before being photographed with Mr Hunt. There was also a 90 second time limit shooting demonstration.

The completion of the new range is a triumph for the volunteer club members.  Costing over £51,000 to complete, half was raised from or by club members, with members carrying out most of the building work themselves.  The other half was raised from grants and the club is particularly grateful to the Foundation for Sport and Arts (£10,000), SITA Trust (£7,060), National Lottery (£5,000) and Grassroots (£3,421) for their substantial contributions to make the construction possible. Godalming plant hire specialist Jackson & Gocher provided all the necessary plant free of charge.
