This year’s Kent-hosted match, held at St Nicholas Rifle and Pistol Club range, Chislehurst, consisted of 40 shots at 50 metres and 20 shots at 100 yards. Persistent gusting wind and changeable light conditions presented a challenge for all the competitors, but the Surrey ladies team of 4 won with a score of 2297 from a possible 2400, beating Hertfordshire by 15 points. Middlesex came in third with 2261 and hosts Kent were fourth with 2226. The final team was Lina Jones (585), Hannah Pugsley (577), Mary Pearse (570) and Stephanie Postlethwaite (565).

There was drama in the stats room in the Marks Shield match due to a score draw between Surrey and Essex on 8632 points from a possible 9000. Calculators were uncased and countback on the 100 yard scores left Surrey trailing Essex by a clear 26 points. The existing countback rules prevailed, despite Surrey County Rifle Captain Lina Jones offering a wishful captains ‘shoot off’ for the honours. Hosts Kent came in third with 8563, Middlesex were fourth at 8541 and Hertfordshire fifth with 8465.

Thanks to all those who turned out to shoot for the teams and particularly to Stephanie Postlethwaite for her hard work in stats and Paula Luke for keeping score and to both for their support throughout the day.
