Surrey succeeded in wresting back the Marks Challenge Shield from Essex by just 5 points in a close run home counties small bore prone rifle championship at Hendon Rifle Club, north London, on 20 May 2012; the 45th time the County has won the Shield in its 107 year history. The County also won the Invicta Shield for the 25th time in 29 years, admittedly on a walk over, as the remainder of the home counties were unable to muster a team for the Sunday shoot.

Teams in the Marks Shield were reduced to the best 13 from a maximum squad of 20; Surrey scoring 7518 from a possible 7800, with Essex close behind on 7513, hosts Hertfordshire on 7477, Kent on 7452 and Middlesex on 7408. Bill Brown once again topped the team’s score sheet with an impressive 585 from 600, closely followed by current County Champion, Austin Wilshire on 583.

Hertfordshire hosted the match, which was ‘through the ranges’ this year, with 20 shots each at 25 yards, 50 metres and 100 yards for each team member. Fortunately the forecast rain held off, although cold and blustery conditions proved to be a challenge in some details.

Thanks to all those who turned out to shoot for the teams and to hosts Hertfordshire, in particular Herts County Captain Yvette Edwards. The 2013 competition will be hosted by Surrey County Small Bore Rifle Association in its centenary year.

Full results of the Marks Shield are set out below.
