The Surrey Open returned on 11 September 2022, after a 2 year hiatus due to COVID. Many things remained the same including the location, the format and the cakes, whilst other things changed, including some new faces amongst our competitors and the absence of our long-time and much missed meeting organiser, the late Colin Powell.
The course of fire for prone-rifle and bench-rest shooters was a Double Dewar and this year the usual advantage of shooting in the afternoon to avoid the sun (the range faces east) was somewhat reduced by the presence of low cloud.
The quality of shooting was high, with excellent performances across the classes and disciplines. The eventual winner and Surrey All Comers Champion for 2022 was Ken Bowley of Ruislip RC, with a score of 790 ex 800 (an average of 98.8), closely followed by Lina Jones, the reigning British Long Range Champion, with a score of 789 ex 800 to claim the Surrey Open Meeting Confined Champion title.
As usual the success of the meeting was due to valued contributions from a team of committed and skilled volunteers, as well as the continued support of Worplesdon Target Shooting Club to host the event at the fine Pitch Place range.
Trophies for the 2022 Surrey Open will be awarded at the Surrey County Smallbore Rifle Association on Saturday 3 December, held at the Surrey Rifle Association, Bisley Camp. The 2023 Surrey Open Rifle and Benchrest Meeting will take place on Sunday 10 September 2023.
The meeting results can be seen on the 2022 results page, more photos can be seen here, and in due course the 2023 entry form will be available at www.scsbra.org
